driving roundabout terror st. andrews castle cathedral home of golf caravan park loch tay oregonian terrain clearcut, etc. fly fishing taymouth castle birks of aberfeldy glenturret distillery towser, world record mouser [ whine ] Message 7041 (0 left): Wed Sept 11, 1996 5:10am From: grechen darling (grechen@echo.com) Subject: w/aw finally got out of the city. i hired a car and i drove and drove and drove. went to St. Andrews and it was cold and boring. went to Kenmore in the Perthshire highlands, and that was much better. eriq came along and we almost had heart attacks on the road. he kept saying "you're too close to the edge!" which is true, because i hit the curb a few times in the city. but i kept thinking, "i'm gonna take off their mirror." our freind micheal is in the country with his mother for a month, and he thinks driving has been a "hoot." that's one way to describe it. good thing eric navigated, because there is no shoulder to pull over onto to look at the map and see where you are. and there are never direction signs until the last minute (if there are any at all). last minute is like, on the corner of the intersection on a "single carridgeway" where people drive 50mph minumum. and roads are not straight. ever. roundabouts are similarly helpful, except you get the same second to read a sign that shows five possible directions, and only one of them is the continuation of your highway. and you don't dare slow down comming up to the roundabout, because if there *isn't* anyone comming from the right and there is someone behind you, they are quite upset that you wasted time by slowing down. micheal described british drivers as "never idling." he's right. they don't. car's stop and the engine is off as soon as a full stop is achieved. start the ignition and the car is moving forwards. no slow three point turns for these people. they are slow about many things, but not driving. driving is fast and furious. micheal says his mother wants a mini next time because she might feel like there is enough lane space for the size of the car. my sentiments exactly.
